Wessex Heartbeat - help us to save a life
Wessex Heartbeat charity was established in 1992 to enable the renowned Wessex Cardiac Centre, in Southampton General Hospital, to become and remain one of the UK’s leading centres of excellence for cardiac care. The Centre treats more than 20,000 people a year, of which 1,000 are babies and children.
Heart disease is the UK’s biggest killer. Every two minutes one of us will suffer a heart attack – almost half of the victims will die. Every year in this country nearly 240,000 people’s lives will be cut short by heart disease.
As Chief Executive D’arcy Myers explains, “Wessex Heartbeat’s focus is on encouraging people to think about their lifestyle and how it affects their heart. It’s about taking steps before they actually need us.
"The charity’s mission is to ensure that everyone affected by heart disease receives the best possible support. It is not just the patient but their immediate family that need this support. We are able to offer patients’ relatives free-of-charge ‘home-from-home’ accommodation in a 25-bedroom house close to the hospital.”
However, there is a need for us to do more. With your help, we can make a real difference to people’s lives.
