Gill RoutledgeWhat is Healthcare? Is it about expecting the GP to give us a magic cure once the body has been run into the ground and stress has taken its toll? Healthcare is taking responsibility and caring for our health. ‘Healthier Choices’ is a statement we have all heard, and we are all aware a good diet, exercise and a positive mental attitude are fundamental.

Complementary therapy is gradually becoming more widely available on the NHS and being introduced in more healthcare settings, including hospitals, GP surgeries and community clinics. Having worked as a General Nurse for over 30 years I have been on both sides of the fence suffering from the debilitating effects of stress and also frustrated with the unnecessary excessive workload placed on a stretched NHS with ailments and illness that can often appear self-inflicted.

I know all too well how easy it is to slide into bad habits, such as eating disorders and addictive tendencies. This is evident in a society now facing problems with obesity and alcohol abuse, and when taken to the extreme can lead to social exclusion, family breakdown, education and career difficulties or even mental health concerns. Obesity and smoking, it is well known, can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Even these are a side effect of deeper issues which can lie underneath the surface. When seeking help the focus is often on the surface issue and not the real problem. Then all that we end up doing is treating the symptoms.

My experience has been that masking the symptoms of depression has not worked well for me and having access to emotional support has been highly beneficial in identifying the underlying issues and releasing negative beliefs. Over the years I have experienced many therapies from Acupuncture to Yoga. Many of these have helped to give me a broader understanding of what needed to be addressed to learn to relax, strengthen my body and take the necessary steps towards being responsible for a healthier lifestyle.

This website has been produced to offer help, support and guidance to both individuals and organisations to promote and maintain both their physical and emotional health. This can lead to a more fulfilling life and enables us to contribute more effectively in a work, social and family environment.

I would highly recommend looking through the Directory pages of this website and as a first step talking with any of the therapists you may be drawn to as many of them have a wealth of knowledge and are often happy to offer some initial help and guidance. When contacting a therapist for private treatment, make sure they are fully qualified and an accredited member of the appropriate organisation (for example the British Acupuncture Council).
